The Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase (CCGP) has approved a total of six proposals including two separate proposals for procuring 70,000 tonnes of fertilizer from Morocco.

The approval came from the meeting of the CCGP on Wednesday held virtually with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting virtually, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said a total of six proposals worth Tk 2,690.42 crore were approved on Wednesday.

Among the proposals, there were three proposals from the Road Transport and Highways Department, two from the Agriculture Ministry and one from the Energy and Mineral Resources Department for approval.

The Finance Minister said, “The expenditure in the six proposals approved by the procurement committee has been fixed at Tk 2,690.42 crore. Out of the total financing, Tk 1,350 crore will be spent from government funds and 1,339.82 crore will come from domestic banks and Indian loans.”

However, the CCGP meeting of the cabinet committee on public procurement approved a proposal to import 30,000 tonnes of TSP fertiliser from Morocco.

Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) under the Ministry of Agriculture will purchase it at a total cost of around Tk 257.11 crore.

Besides, another proposal of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) under the Ministry of Agriculture also approved to import 40,000 tonnes of DAP fertiliser from Morocco.

The total cost of the purchase will be around Tk 398.99 crore.

However, TSP fertilizer is an important ingredient in crop production in the country.

In order to meet the country’s demand, BADC has been importing TSP fertilizer from OCP, a state-owned company in Morocco, from the financial year 2008-2009.

The annual demand for TSP fertilizer in Bangladesh including security stock is about 9 lakh metric tonnes. Of this, BADC supplies about 450,000 metric tonnes of TSP fertilizer through state contracts.

According to sources, the agreement between BADC and OCP was renewed on December 22, 2021, keeping the terms and conditions of the existing agreement.

Under the agreement, BADC will import a total of 360,000 metric tonnes of TSP fertilizer from Morocco. Prices will be fixed in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
