The government is conscious of the ongoing crisis in the country surrounding the price hike of onions. The situation has arisen

from a combination of factors, including weather conditions.

However, the crisis is not fully natural and man-made factors are at play in the rising price of onion. The government has decided to take matter into its own hands and find the people responsible.

The price of onions in countries where onion is being imported from is also high which is reflected in the local price of onions. The government has taken the initiative to import onions by cargo plane which is expected to ease the situation.

The onions will be flown in from Egypt, Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates. Moreover, onion consignments trapped in different seaports in the country due to cyclone ‘Bulbul’ will also reach the country soon.

Syndicates are working behind the scenes

to control the price of the valuable

commodity and driving its price higher

Already importers have been supplying onion from Myanmar, Turkey, China, Russia and other countries to stabilize the price but to no avail. Syndicates are working behind the scenes to control the price of the valuable commodity and driving its price higher. These groups are making huge amount of profit each day while people in the country are suffering immensely.

The price of onions has been on the rise since late September when India banned its exports. The government’s investigation will hopefully highlight any external forces which have caused the situation to worsen.

The situation has brought to light the helplessness of people when prices of essential commodities rise. The government must get to the bottom of the matter as soon as possible in order to come up with a solution.

We applaud the government’s initiative to import onions by cargo planes on an emergency basis. However, if needed, the onions should be sold at a subsidized price to people to ease their suffering.
