The government has undertaken an initiative to build new housing flats for government officials of Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat at Agargaon in the capital.
For this reason, a project titled ‘Construction of 112 residential flats for government officials of Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat at Agargaon, Dhaka’ has been proposed in the Planning Commission, official sources said.
The total cost of its implementation has been estimated at Tk 98.21 crore, they mentioned.
Residential accommodation for government officials will be ensured if the project is implemented, they said, adding that by ensuring improved and healthy housing, the stakeholders expect better services from government employees and fair use of government unused land.
SatyajitKarmakar, the former member of physical infrastructure division in charge of the project and current planning secretary said, “Through the implementation of the project, it will be possible to get better services by ensuring healthy accommodation for government officials. Hence the project can be approved. That is why it has been recommended to present to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec).”
An official of the Planning Commission said that after receiving the proposal from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, the
Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting was held on November 9 last year.
“Following the recommendations given in that meeting, the project has been recommended to present in the next meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC),” he mentioned.
“If approved, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works will implement it by December 2025,” he added.
According to the project proposal, to solve the problem related to housing of government officials or employees, the Prime Minister ordered to increase the housing benefit of government officials and employees from 8 percent to 40 percent.
According to the rules of business to implement the directives of the Prime Minister, the Department of Public Works is constructing government housing to solve the residential problems of government employees across the country.
Parliament Secretariat currently has 1,327 employees and 819 of them have accommodation facilities.
In the fourth meeting of the Parliament Committee of the Eleventh National Parliament on October 6, 2019, it was decided that 2 multi-storied buildings can be constructed on vacant land adjacent to 448 flats in Agargaon to provide housing for the officers and employees of the National Assembly Secretariat.
An area of 1.20 acres has been reserved for future expansion on the site (5.20 acres) of the ‘448 Flat Construction Project for JatiyaSangsad Secretariat Employees’ completed in 2017 at Agargaon, Dhaka'.
This project is proposed to demolish the existing dilapidated tin sheds and other temporary structures and construct a building of 1,250 square feet flats 15 floors and a residential building of 1,000 square feet flats 15 floors (total number of flats 112).
The main activities of the project are - 1,250 sq. ft. flat 15 storey building, 1,000 sq. ft. flat 15 storey building, 185.80 sq. mtrs sub-station building cum PWD office, 1 lakh gallon underground reservoir, installation of a deep tube well, water Provision of supply system, STP and sewage system.
Besides, rainwater harvesting, 1,381.82 square meters of internal roads and footpaths, 363.68 meters of master drain, 2,745.53 meters of boundary walls, 10 gondolas (maintenance equipment for high-rise buildings), one set of sub-stations, 2 sets of diesel generator, 4 sets of lifts and fire fighting system.
