The interim government has sought an explanation from the officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi police station over the grounds on which rickshaw-puller Azizur Rahman was picked up from Dhanmondi-32 and named as a suspect in a case.

It has also instructed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to check whether there were any inconsistencies in the recent actions or statements of the police officer concerned, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.

Besides, police have been asked to submit a report without delay on the investigation into Azizur Rahman’s alleged involvement in the case in accordance with the recently amended Section 173(A) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

Azizur Rahman, 27, a rickshaw-puller and a resident of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, was beaten by a mob at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital on Friday afternoon (Aug 15) while attempting to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his death anniversary. He had been there with a bouquet of flowers in hand.

During interrogation, Azizur said that he was not affiliated with any political party and had come just out of respect for Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

As his arrest and subsequent case sparked outcry on social media, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police issued a statement saying that Azizur was not shown arrested in any murder case.

After his arrest, he was produced before a court on August 16 as a suspect in a case filed at Dhanmondi Police Station in April, according to a DMP media release signed by Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media).

Different social media platforms were found spreading misinformation regarding his arrest and the nature of the case which has come to the attention of DMP, the media release said.

Azizur was produced before a Dhaka court as a suspect in a regular case under the Penal Code.

Misinformation is being spread that the rickshaw-puller was sent to court in connection with a murder case, but this claim is entirely false and misleading.

The DMP also requested all to refrain from spreading confusion regarding the matter.

Later, a Dhaka court granted bail to Azizur Rahman on a bond of Tk 1000.
