The government is fully prepared to face the possible severe cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’, which is likely to cross the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by this morning.
The storm “Yaas” over east-central bay and adjoining area moved north-northwestwards and now lies over North West Bay and adjoining area till filing of this write-up on Tuesday night.
Yaas, a very severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 155-165 kmph is also likely to hit the coastal belt of Khulna, a south-western district of Bangladesh, when it will change its direction.
The ministries concerned will move the locals to the flood shelters immediately when the cyclonic storm changes its direction. In this regard all the flood shelters have been kept ready.
As the coastal people are vulnerable to disasters, an
integrated coordination among government and
nongovernmental agencies is a must in this regard
We remember, a large number of people lost their lives during different types of severe cyclonic storms like Sidr, Aila and Amphan over the last few years as they did not pay heed to the government's request to go to safer places. These strong cyclonic storms also destroyed houses, crop lands and poultry farms, washed away fish ponds, uprooted trees and breached dams and embankments, leaving a trail of devastation along the coast of the country.
As the coastal people are vulnerable to disasters, an integrated coordination among government and nongovernmental agencies is a must in this regard.
We think as the early warning system has been developed, people living in coastal areas before, during and after can protect their lives and property from cyclonic storms if they remain alert, abiding by all instructions.
