The health directorate has completed the recruitment of the new doctors and posted them in the hospitals dedicated for COVID-19 patients.
A total of 2,000 more doctors of 39th (special) Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination under the Public Service Commission (PSC) were recruited and given postings to tackle the coronavirus situation, said a government order.
An order in this regard has been published at the official website of Directorate General of Health Services (https://dghs.gov.bd/index.php/en/).
The doctors are set to take up their new posts as ‘assistant surgeon’ on May 12.
Those doctors were recruited from the list of 8,107 applicants who were overlooked despite passing the written and oral tests in 39 special BCS exams due to a shortage of posts in the public health sector.
The Public Service Commission recommended them after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention to ease the strain on the overburdened health sector.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notice announcing their recruitment on May 4.
It said their service during this time of crisis would be evaluated while making their jobs permanent.
As of Sunday, Bangladesh confirmed 14657 cases of coronavirus and 228 deaths from the disease since March 8 when the first three patients were detected.
The World Health Organisation declared the disease pandemic on March 11.
