The government has formulated a ten-year long master plan to save the Karnaphuli River. The Karnaphuli River is akin to a lifeline for the city of Chattogram. However, there has been a lack of initiative in preservation efforts. The plan is to include both long and short term programmes. The authority is trying to ensure that the wastages of the city do not mix with the river.
The issue of riverbank encroachment has been addressed and steps being taken to recover the encroached land. Plans are also being made to turn recovered riverbanks into tourist spots. According to sources, besides the eviction of illegal structures from the riverbanks, the masterplan includes programmes over how to increase the navigability of the river and make it free of pollution.
The plan will also provide guidelines for the sewerage system and waste management. Recreation spots would also be built on the recovered lands and a monitoring team would work for preventing the riverbanks from encroachment again.
It is high time that steps
are taken to preserve the
Karnaphuli River, which
is vital to the overall
wellbeing of Chattogram
Karnaphuli River is a valuable source of income as well as a route for transportation in the region. It is imperative that steps are taken to prevent river pollution and riverbank encroachment in order to save the river.
In 2015, a water treatment plant was set up by Chittagong Port Authority to source water from the Karnaphuli River for its uses. The plant has made the port self-reliant in its water needs. However, unless river pollution is addressed, the water of the river might become unusable and toxic, leading to adverse health effects for the locals.
Pollution is also harmful to the aquatic life in the river. The river is home to Ganges river dolphin, which is an endangered species. Hilsa used to be common in the river, but have nearly disappeared from the river due to pollution.
The government’s initiative to save the river is admirable and shows the foresight of the current authorities. They were able to accurately assess the importance of the river and its wellbeing and are being proactive in river conservation efforts.
