In a move to make constant enhancement in our agricultural sector and become more self-sufficient in food, the government has taken on a Tk 438 crore project to cultivate fallow land across the country. This certainly adds up to the government’s ongoing plan of development in each and every sector of the country.

Our prime minister has always been farmer-friendly and under her astute leadership, the current government is working relentlessly with utmost importance on agricultural development.

Under this project, family nutrition gardens will be established in personal yards and fallow land. But strict monitoring is needed to ensure optimum utilization of arable land and bringing fallow lands under cultivation as only then food production will increase. Bringing fallow lands under cultivation alone will not bring the desired result.

We know that agricultural land loss is a growing problem for our country with the increase in population. While the agricultural land is decreasing due to the increase in population, more farmland for crop cultivation will be required to feed the additional number of people. Therefore, with strict monitoring this project will help to rectify that dilemma.

We feel proper research is needed to determine exactly how much of the fallow land would be brought under cultivation. Government should also make sure that the developed varieties and technologies of crops and seeds reach the farmers quickly so that they can yield more.

Awareness and guidance are also required so that they know the proper use of these new seeds and technologies and cultivate them within the correct time frame. If implemented properly, this development project will propel us towards a more food sustainable nation as it will increase food production further.
