‘Govt ensures reasonable price of imported commodities ’

Stocks and supply of all daily necessities including rice, edible oil, sugar, onion, ginger, garlic and spices are normal in the country. The government has taken necessary steps to keep the prices of import dependent products at a reasonable level.

The Ministry of Commerce is working to ensure prices in the country in line with international market prices. The National Directorate of Consumer Protection has intensified market monitoring and operations across the country. 

Commerce Secretary TapanKanti Ghosh said this while presiding over a meeting organized by the Commerce Ministry at the ministry’s secretariat Office to keep the stock, supply, import and price situation of essential commodities normal and stable on Wednesday.

Asking traders to cooperate sincerely citing the country has adequate stock of goods as compared to the need the Commerce Secretary said, “The government has taken steps to ensure that there is no shortage or disruption in the supply of goods in the market or to create a crisis in the product by artificial means.”

“The Ministry of Commerce has continued to sell essential commodities in the open market at subsidized prices through TCB. 

This time around two and a half times more products are being sold than last year. The government will take appropriate action in accordance with the law in case of unjust stocking of goods or attempts to increase prices in an artificial way,” added the commerce secretary.

TapanKantiGhosh said, “The government has started importing rice to keep the supply and price of rice in the market normal and the import duty has been reduced. The government has taken all possible steps to keep the supply of goods normal. Monitoring has been intensified to ensure reasonable prices of imported edible oil and sugar”.

The meeting was attended by the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Competition Commission and former senior secretary Md. Mofizul Islam, Director General of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department Bablu Kumar Saha, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce (Exports) Md. Hafizur Rahman, Additional Secretary (IIT) AHM Safiquzzaman, FBCCI Senior Vice President Mostafa Azad Chowdhury, Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission Member Abu Raihan Al-Beruni, TCB Chairman Brigadier General Md. ArifulHasan and others.
