The government has asked all public and non-governmental organisations and others concerned to manage the wastes of sacrificial animals properly during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha aiming to prevent environmental pollution across the country.

The instruction was made at an inter-ministerial meeting held at the conference room of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Tuesday on the occasion of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha.   The authorities directed the people to refrain from slaughtering animals at any place and bury the soil by leaving blood, dung and discarded parts in the holes, an official release said.

The ministry also stressed use of eco-friendly bags or pots for removal of sacrificial waste or distribution of sacrificial meat and disposal of slaughtered animal remains in the dustbin or at designated places.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed virtually presided over the meeting.

The meeting was attended by Additional Secretary (Administration) of the ministry Iqbal Abdullah Harun. Additional Secretary (Climate Change) Md Moniruzzaman, Additional Secretary (Environment) Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik and Director General of the Department of Environment (DoE) Dr Abdul Hamid, among others, were present at the meeting.

At the meeting, it was decided to distribute four lakh copies of leaflets nationwide through city corporations, municipalities, the DoE, district administrations and district information offices.

In addition, the DoE will take steps to reach out to the public through text messages.  Awareness leaflets have been distributed in mosques across the country through the Islamic Foundation, and imams of mosques have been urged to speak at Jumma prayers on what to do to keep the environment clean.

Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar as well as private channels and broadcasters are requested to broadcast the message regarding the proper removal of sacrificial animal waste.
