The government has decided to hold trial of cases filed against jailed BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. The former prime minister, sentenced to 17 years in jail in two corruption cases, is now undergoing treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. The law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry issued a notice for transferring the trial court, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kazol said on Monday.
A special court, set up at building-2 in Keraniganj Central Jail, will continue the trial proceedings of the cases including Niko, Gatco and Barapukuria coal mine graft cases due to security reasons, said the notification. The trial of Niko case has been continuing inside Old Dhaka Central Jail while the trial of Gatco and Barapukuria coal mine cases have been held at a makeshift court at Government Alia Madrasa in the capital's Bakshibazar area. Of the cases, hearing of the Gatco case scheduled to be held tomorrow will be held now at Keraniganj Central Jail.
