A total of 370,000 positions out of 1,915,100 government jobs remain vacant, Public Administration Minister Farhad Hossain on Tuesday says. Administrative and other official activities at different government offices and departments are being hampered seriously due to manpower shortages. Due to an acute shortage of officials and staff, most of the government offices are unable to provide services to people.

The BBS’s latest data shows that the total number of unemployed people in the country remains unchanged in the 1st quarter of 2024 with 2.59 million (unemployment rate 3.51%) equaling with 2.59 million (unemployment rate 3.51%) registered in the 1st quarter of 2023. Considering the unemployment issue in the country, the government should recruit the existing vacant posts of public administration to make public services smooth and people-oriented.

In its election manifesto ahead of this year’s January 7 general election, Awami League set a target to create employment opportunities for 12.8 million people during the period. The government is establishing 100 economic zones across the country while the implementation of different mega projects continues.  In the economic zones and mega projects, a large number of employment will be created. That is why we, think the target of creating employment opportunities should be fulfilled as per electoral commitment within the government’s tenure.

Once we had to witness serious session jam taking away valuable time of the university students of the country. But, now our students do not face such situation and they are completing their honours and master’s on time.

After passing out from their universities or higher educational institutions, they start applying for different government and private jobs. However, they are now facing serious difficulties due to lengthy recruitment procedure especially of the government jobs including attractive public cadre service one.

Thousands of jobseekers are in deep frustration for the lengthy process. They become the burden of their respective family and the burden of the country as well.

It is not acceptable to linger in the recruitment process showing lame excuses rather the selected candidates should be given appointments at their respective sectors. We believe as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has vowed to advance the country further by overcoming all hurdles, her government is working to create employment opportunities for the youths. PSC and other authorities concerned will complete various recruitment procedures soonest through boosting the use of information technology.
