Google Pay: A new era of digital payments

Published : 27 Jun 2025 08:37 PM

Bangladesh now officially supports Google Pay through Google Wallet, marking a landmark moment in its journey toward a cashless, digital economy.

Launched on June 24, the service debuted in partnership with City Bank, and in collaboration with Mastercard and Visa. This makes City Bank the first local bank integrated directly with Google Pay.

How Google Pay Works in Bangladesh

Users must have,  An Android smartphone running version 9 or later with NFC support

The updated Google Wallet app from the Play Store A valid Google Account, plus a City Bank Mastercard or Visa card.

Once the card is added and verified, a user simply unlocks their phone and taps it at any NFC‑enabled POS terminal to pay—either locally or internationally. No physical card is needed, and Google charges no transaction fee.

For online or app purchases, the “Buy with Google Pay” button enables fast, secure checkout without re‑entering card details.

Key Features & Facilities

Contactless, tap‑to‑pay convenience anywhere NFC terminals are available, in Bangladesh and beyond.

Bank‑grade security through tokenization: real card numbers are never stored on the device; each payment uses a unique virtual token

Offline passes inside Wallet: store boarding passes, loyalty cards, tickets, transit cards, and more in one place.

Global usability: Because the cards work via Mastercard and Visa networks, users can tap abroad, shop online internationally, and travel with ease.   Future expansion: Other banks are expected to join; integration with local mobile financial services like bKash, Nagad, and Rocket may arrive over time.

Why It Matters for Bangladesh

Boosts digital financial inclusion: As City Bank CEO Masrur Arefin said, Bangladesh is now stepping into a future-ready fintech ecosystem. It brings convenience, transparency, and global access to everyday users.

Raises the bar for payment standards: Nigeria, India, or Pakistan also use Google Wallet widely. Bangladesh’s entry into this group signals maturity, aligning local systems with global norms.

Challenges and gaps highlighted: Some concerns remain—such as reliance on internet connectivity, smartphone limits, and support infrastructure. Experts suggest offline backups and emergency suspensions (e.g., via SMS commands) should be built in.

Getting Started with Google Pay

1. Install or update to the latest Google Wallet app on an Android device (version 9+).

2. Add and verify your City Bank Mastercard or Visa card via the app.

3. Enable NFC and set Google Wallet as default payment method in phone settings.

4. To pay, simply unlock your phone and tap it at any compatible POS machine. For online checkout, look for the “Buy with Google Pay” option. Google Pay’s launch in Bangladesh brings secure, contactless, and international payment capabilities to Android users for the first time.

Initially limited to City Bank cardholders, it promises to expand into wider banking and digital financial sectors. If infrastructure, security systems, and internet support keep pace, Google Pay could reshape everyday commerce and pave the way toward a truly digital Bangladesh.
