‘Golden Monir’ put on 18-day remand

Two separate Dhaka courts placed Monir Hossain alias Golden Monir on a eighteen days remand in three separate cases.

Police had sought twenty one days remand in three cases in connection with possessing illegal fire arms, liquor and foreign currencies, court sources said.

Police produced him before the courts with tight security.

Earlier, the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed three cases against Golden Monir. RAB handed over him to Badda Police Station around 6:15am on Sunday. Parvez Islam,Officer-in-Charge of Badda police station, confirmed the matter to Bangladesh Post.

RAB arrested alleged gold smuggler Golden Monir in an overnight raid from the Merul Badda area of the capital Dhaka on Saturday.

According to the crime-buster, Monir first worked as a salesman at a cloth store in city’s Gausia Market in the 1990s. But through gold smuggling, he amassed wealth of Tk 1,050 crore within 30 years.

He has a car showroom and more than 200 plots and holds shares of a renowned jewelry shop in the city.

The RAB team seized a foreign pistol, several rounds of bullets, foreign currencies of 10 countries worth Tk nine lakh, gold ornaments weighing 8 kgs and cash Tk one crore from his possession.

The RAB personnel also recovered five cars from his possession. Two of these luxurious cars’ worth is Tk 6 crore.
