Golden Jubilee of Jatiya Sangsad to be celebrated on April 7

The Golden Jubilee of Jatiya Sangsad will be celebrated on April 7 in a befitting manner. 

The JatiyaSangsad (National Parliament of Bangladesh), under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, started its journey on April 7, 1973. Bangabandhu was the Leader of the first JatiyaSangsad. 

The first session of the JatiyaSangsad was held at the then SangsadBhaban at Tejgaon on April 7. Fifty years of the JatiyaSangsad will be completed on April 7, this year. 

The general election of 300 seats of the JatiyaSangsad was held on March 7, 1973. The number of 

women reserved seats was 15 meaning total Members of Parliament were 315. 

Mohammad Mohammadullah became the first Speaker of JatiyaSangsad while Mohammad Baitullah became deputy speaker of the JatiyaSangsad. 

Afterwards, Mohammad Mohammadullah became President of Bangladesh and Abdul MalequeUkil was elected as the Speaker of the JatiyaSangsad. 

The 11th JatiyaSangsad will go into 22nd session on April 6.

This will also be a special session of the JS to mark Bangladesh JatiyaSangsad's 50th anniversary. 

President Abdul Hamid convened the session exercising the power bestowed upon him by Article 72 (1) of the Constitution. 

The session, the second session of this year, will begin at 11am on April 6.

President Hamid is scheduled to deliver a speech at the special session. 

According to the constitution, the President must convene a session within 60 days of the last sitting of the previous session. The last session of parliament was prorogued on February 9.

JatiyaSangsadBhaban or National Parliament House, is the house of the Parliament of Bangladesh, located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.  

Architect Louis Kahn designed the complex of JatiyaSangsad, which is one of the largest legislative complexes in the world, covering 215 acres.
