GM Quader has been made the chairman of Jatiya Party, the main opposition in the 11th National Parliament. The announcement came on Thursday, two days after the burial of the party’s founder and former president HM Ershad. Jatiya Party General Secretary Mashiur Rahman Ranga made the announcement at a press conference held at the party’s Banani office.

He said GM Quader was made chairman in accordance to their party constitution, which says that the acting chairman will be officially made the chairman of Jatiya Party if the party chief passes away. Before his death, Ershad said that GM Quader would be the acting chairman of the party in his absence following the party constitution, Ranga said.

“We have decided GM Quader will be the party chairman from today.” In an immediate reaction, Quader said there was no faction or feud within the party. “We are united and will remain united,” he added. “We will form an organizational team to strengthen the district and divisional level of the party,” he added.
