Barishal University is celebrating its 11th founding anniversary of success. Barishal University has been able to maintain its unique position among the 53 public universities of the country by conducting education, research and co-educational activities. Barishal University is moving forward in anticipation of a bright future through the relentless work of a group of young and talented teachers, meritorious students, officers and employees.
The great architect of independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in his speech at a public meeting held at the then Bell's Park (now Bangabandhu Udyan) in 1973, announced the establishment of a full-fledged public university in Barishal outside Dhaka. In order to make that declaration of Bangabandhu a reality, Hon'ble Prime Minister of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of Barishal University on 50 acres of land at Karnakathi in Barishal Sadar Upazila on 22 February 2011.
Through this the successful realization of the long standing logical expectations, demands and cherished dreams of the people of Barishal began. The following year, on 24th January, 2012, the academic activities of Barishal University got off to a good start by conducting temporary campus activities and enrolling students in the college building of District School Campus, a traditional educational institution of Barishal city.
At the time of its establishment, Barishal University started its journey with 400 students from 6 departments under 4 faculties. At present the university has about 9,000 students studying in 24 departments under 6 faculties. The university, which has 190 teachers, 105 officers and 156 employees, is spreading the light of knowledge in its self-glory as a craftsman for creating a skilled population.
With the sincerity and diligent efforts of every member of the university family, Barishal University is doing a very good job of spreading Bangabandhu's philosophy and the spirit of liberation war among the young generation including academic, research and co-education. If this trend continues, the university will soon become an effective research-based higher education institution based on technology through the spread of education and research, development of free thinking and creative activities. Barishal University has taken various effective steps at different times to spread the thoughts, consciousness and philosophy of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to future generations. On the golden jubilee of Mujib's birth and independence, 24 departments of Barishal University organized year-round webinars on Bangabandhu and Liberation War, Bangabandhu Olympiad, quiz competition, display of diaries on Bangabandhu and Liberation War, debate competition, tree planting, voluntary blood donation program. At the academic level, various programs including journal publication, sports and cultural competitions were dedicated to Bangabandhu from 6 faculties of the university. Virtual participation of eminent persons from home and abroad makes organizing important.
Barishal University celebrates its founding anniversary in a grand manner every year. Where there is the presence of eminent personalities. Due to the harsh reality of the Corona epidemic, this year's founding anniversary may not be a grand event, but the virtual presence of elite individuals will bring a different dimension to the event.
