In a spirited address to party activists, BNP's nominated candidate for the Comilla-6 constituency (Comilla Adarsha Sadar and Sadar Dakshin Upazila), Alhaj Monirul Haque Chowdhury, has made a fervent appeal to the voters, asking for "one more opportunity" to serve them and promising to transform the city.
The call was made at a workers' rally organized by a section of the metropolitan BNP at Noagaon Chaumuhani on Saturday afternoon.
Chowdhury issued a clarion call to BNP leaders and workers, urging them to set aside all internal conflicts and unite for the upcoming national election. He directed them to go door-to-door to secure votes in the name of Begum Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman, and the party's symbol, the 'Sheaf of Paddy.'
"From now on, BNP leaders and activists must visit voters' homes and seek votes for Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman, and the Sheaf of Paddy," he declared. "For the sake of the party, we must forget all differences, jealousy, and feuds and prepare for the upcoming election with unity."
Directly appealing to the constituents, Chowdhury staked his credibility on development. "For the development of Comilla City Corporation, see me by making me victorious in the election once. I will not betray your trust," he vowed.
Outlining his vision, he made several specific pledges:
"I want to present a new Comilla so that the people of Bangladesh can truly appreciate Comilla," he stated.
The BNP leader launched a sharp attack on the government, particularly concerning the party's Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman. He alleged that Tarique Rahman was "tortured extensively" during the rule of the past caretaker government (referring to 1/11 in 2007).
"However, Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman never compromised with the Awami League," Chowdhury claimed. He further accused the government of preventing Tarique from visiting his ailing mother and held the "past government" responsible for the death of his younger brother, Arafat Rahman, due to a "lack of treatment."
"He was not even allowed to see his brother. The Awami League has kept Mr. Tarique Rahman abroad for a long time by filing false cases," he alleged.
Adding weight to Chowdhury's candidacy, former Mayor of Comilla City Corporation, Monirul Haque Sakku, expressed his full support. He stated that the party's Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, had chosen the "right candidate" for the Comilla-6 Sadar seat.
"I am extremely happy that Alhaj Monirul Haque Chowdhury, a qualified leader, has been given the nomination," Sakku said. He added that if Chowdhury is elected as the Member of Parliament, it would create a favorable opportunity for BNP to win the next Comilla City Corporation mayor election, making it a central talking point among party ranks.
The rally was also addressed by other prominent BNP leaders of Comilla metropolis, including Dr. Shah Muhammad Selim, Amiruzzaman Amir, Advocate Omar Faruq Chowdhury, and Akhtar Hossain, among others.
