Ghorashal Thermal Power Plant Unit-5 resumes generation

Published : 20 Oct 2022 09:57 PM

Power generation at the 210 MW capacity unit-5 of Ghorashal Thermal Power Plant resumed on Wednesday night, around 11pm after eight days of suspension following mechanical glitches.

Abu Bakar Siddique, acting chief engineer of the plant, confirmed the development. He said on October 4, when there was a national grid failure, the plant's Unit-5, was shut down as a result of an unexpected mechanical issue.

After seven days, the issue was fixed, and the unit was opened on October 10. However, on October 12, two days after the re-launch, the unit's bearing failed to continue work, and it had to be shut down again. The unit resumed full production last night after eight days of bearing repair work was finished.

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) official said the power plant is now generating 170 MW electricity, against its installed capacity of 210 MW, which would help improve the electricity supply situation in Dhaka and surrounding areas.

Dhaka city and its adjoining areas are still experiencing frequent power supply due to a huge gap between power supply and demand.

BPDB data shows the country’s power generation varies between 11,000 MW and 12,000 MW, following the national grid failure on October 4, 2022 - against a demand for 14,000 to 14,500 MW.
