In the great war of liberation of 1971, the Pak aggressors and their accomplices caught innocent people and shot them dead inside the Barguna jail on this day. Since then every year on May 29, Barguna Genocide Day is observed. The day has been celebrated in Barguna through various programs.

On May 29, 1971, under the direction of Captain Shawkat, Inspector Syed Anwar Ali, Advocate Idris Mia discussed the matter with the Peace Committee and made a list.

The army was said to be inferior to the Hindus of Barguna. Hearing this, Nader Parvez asked the Hindus to come to their house. They returned to the city on the assurance of the peace committee. But the invading forces broke their trust and arrested them and detained them in jail.

At the behest of Major Nader Parvez, he captured innocent people from their homes and shot them dead inside the jail.

After being shot in the jaw, Dr. Krishnakant was trying to crawl to the top of the mass grave when the men of the peace committee brutally beat him with a spade. Shanu along with his brother Farooq from  Maitha village was shot at the same time. Shanu died but Farooq miraculously survived.

On the occasion of Barguna Genocide Day on Friday afternoon at Barguna Mass Grave, Bir Muktijoddha and General Secretary of Barguna District Community Policing Sukhranjan Shil, Barguna Khelaghar Central Committee Representative Journalist Chittaranjan Shil, and under the leadership of Barguna Press Club President Advocate Sanjeev Das, wreaths were laid at the mass grave in memory of the martyrs and lamps were lit in the evening.
