The national gas pipeline will be getting additional supply of gas through the installation of three new gas transmission lines. 500mmcfd gas will be added to national grid starting from next month which will ensure that the present gas deficit problem is solved.

The government has taken several initiatives to meet the country’s gas demands. The country’s total demand for consumption of gas is gradually increasing. However, gas reserves in Bangladesh’s own fields are depleting quickly. As a result, the government took the decision to import LNG in 2010 in order to meet the energy deficit.

The government’s timely initiative to increase

the current deficit is commendable indeed.

The construction of the three pipe lines will facilitate the transport of imported LNG. Majority of the work for the project has been completed, while the remaining will be completed in a month’s time. The government’s timely initiative to increase the supply of gas in order to fulfill the current deficit is commendable indeed. Currently the supply is not enough to meet the demands of the citizens of the country.

Without gas supply, countless households suffer as they cannot carry out the crucial task of cooking. Moreover, due to the deficit and the high cost of importing gas, the price of gas supply increased last year.  Lower and middle income households have struggled to keep up with the price hike. Hopefully, the increase in supply of gas will ensure that that are no further increases in the price of gas.

The government must now ensure that gas supply to households remain uninterrupted. Future price hikes should be prevented by subsidizing the import of gas, as those with limited family income struggle to pay for daily necessities like gas and electricity.   The authorities should also ensure that households are getting the amount of units that they are being charged for. Full transparency in the sector is highly needed in order to overcome the deficit.
