Strides have been made in gas supply in the country with locating new gas fields in the country and also establishing new gas links to the grid ensuring more gas supply for the public use. With 27 gas fields currently supplying in the country, it is indeed a matter of kudos for such a plenty of gas supply in the country.

It is encouraging to know that the country’s gas supply has doubled over the past decade, according to a report published in this daily. The report reveals that the current gas supply stands at around 3,200 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), which include around 650 mmcfd of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), against 1,744 mmcfd in 2009.

This vast difference speaks of the achievement of the country in gas production. But it needs to do better as gas is something indispensible for both residential and industrial areas. It is no denying the fact that gas supply is ensured all over the country even with the limited stock and means of supply. Moreover, even if the supply of gas has doubled it leaves much to be desired. There are still many areas of the country where pipeline gas supply is not available and still there are many residential apartments in the country that are not given permission for gas supply by pipeline.

These problems need to be addressed properly. Sustainable growth of the gas sector must be ensured so that proper utilisation of this natural resource can be done by the country.

Moreover, countrywide gas coverage should be done for the purpose of development.

That being said, there is also digitization being done in this sector with prepaid meters in Dhaka and Chattogram being in the process of setting up. This is a positive step by the government. This advance must be kept in continuation so that all the areas in the country can be brought under total gas coverage.

In conclusion, we can applaud the government to be able to set up a deep sea floating unloading facility, which has reduced the price of LPG gas in the country. Moreover, with the country slowly shifting towards LNG import, the gas supply diminished in the residential sector is also being slowly brought back. This is something that needs to be expanded in future more with expanding of gas sector in the country.
