Gas crunch acute in Sylhet fuel stations

Published : 24 Dec 2022 08:57 PM

Several CNG filling stations in Sylhet have stopped gas supply due to the expiry of the fixed monthly allocation limit of gas. As a result, there is a severe shortage of gas in Sylhet.

The few open pumps also have long queues of vehicles. Less than half of the gas demand is being supplied. Due to a shortfall in gas supply, public life has suffered greatly.

Since Saturday (December 24) morning, the vehicles had to return without gas after going to various filling stations without getting supplies. The drivers and passengers of various vehicles are in trouble.

According to the related sources, many CNG filling stations are running low on gas due to the expiry of the fixed monthly allocation limit of gas. So they are temporarily closed. And those that are open also have less gas pressure. As a result, gas is not being supplied to everyone as per the demand, and at the same time, the pressure of vehicles has increased.

Common people are suffering due to a lack of gas supply. A passenger named Mamun will go to Sunamganj by private car. But after waiting for a long time at the CNG filling station located in Medina Market, Ambarkhan, did not get gas.

Due to the closure of filling stations, various types of vehicles are in dire shortage of gas. Pressure has increased on open stations. Even from those stations, vehicles are being given less than half of the gas they need. As a result, the vehicles are not running at the desired level.

A driver named Monir said that CNG filling stations are closed from 5 pm to 11 pm. But today many pumps shut off gas from everyone. The one or two CNG filling stations that are open also have long queues.

Sylhet Petrol Pump Association Secretary General Zurayer Ahmed Chowdhury said that Jalalabad Gas Company allocates a certain amount of gas to every pump in the Sylhet district. But before the end of the month, especially in the third week, many pumps in the district sold out the allotted gas. As a result, before the end of the month, these pumps fall into gas shortage. This crisis has been going on for the last four-five months. But this crisis lasts two to three days.

Jurayer Ahmed Chowdhury said that according to the 2007 agreement, Jalalabad supplies gas to us all the way. Now 2022, traffic has increased. Gas demand has also increased. We have requested Jalalabad Gas Company to increase the amount of monthly allocation. But if natural gas is not produced in the country, where will we get gas from?
