The ongoing lockdown affected the fruit markets in the country. Nationwide strict lockdown from July 1st were imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 infection.
People during the two week –long lockdown were instructed not to go outside of their houses except emergency purposes. As a result, usual trades and businesses in fruit markets drastically fell down due to the lack of fruit consumers. To prevent the massive loss, wholesalers are decreasing the price of fruits.
After visiting Karwan Bazar wholesale fruit market it was seen that the price of fruits was down as traders and hawkers could not come to the market due to lockdown.
Import of fruit was also heavily decreased due to lack of buyers. The wholesalers were selling mangoes, jackfruits and other native fruits at lower prices than previous week to prevent further losses. Despite the price drop, sellers in despair complained that the market remains almost empty as customers could not come to the market due to lockdown.
Meanwhile, the price of fruit at retail market has not dropped yet as retail sellers in the capital said the transportation cost increased by huge margin during the lockdown. Thus, despite the massive price drop, small vendors and retailers cannot sell fruits even at lower prices.
