Fruit bagging of mangoes begins in Rajshahi

To ensure safe and insecticide-free fruit production, bagging of some 50 lakh mangoes starts in the orchards of Rajshahi.

It is expected that at least 1,000 metric tonnes of mangoes will be processed under 'fruit bagging' system this year of which at least 300 metric tonnes of mangoes will be exported abroad. 

Only the best quality mangoes will be brought under 'fruit bagging' system, sources said. 

It is learnt that more than 200 members of Rajshahi Agro Food Producer Society were engaged in mango 'fruit bagging' system this year. 

Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton inaugurated the mango 'fruit bagging' system at a fruit orchard in Rajshahi Cantonment area on Sunday morning.

RCC Mayor Liton during the inauguration said, "Mangoes of Rajshahi are being exported to various countries, mainly in European countries which is an encouraging news for the people of the country."

 He further said, "Rajshahi is a agriculture based region and the economy of the region will be strengthened through establishing agro-based industries here."

Anowarul Haque, President of Rajshahi Agro Food Producer Society said, "It is essential to bag fruits before exporting those abroad. He said, they would bag at least 50 lakh mango fruits this year from which they are expecting to export some 300 metric tonnes of mango abroad." 

 KJM Abdul Hye, Deputy Director of DAE, Rajshahi said that DAE always encourages the farmers to adopt 'fruit bagging' system to ensure production of safe and insecticide-free fruits.

 According to the department of Agriculture in Rajshahi, a total of 17,943 hectares of land have been brought under mango farming in the district this year with a target of producing 219,000 metric tonnes of mangoes in the district.
