Rajshahi Raskha Sangram Parishad (RRSP), a socio-environmental organisation in cooperation with Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon(BAPA) organised a human chain and held a meeting at the Zero point of Shaheb Bazar on Tuesday demanding the recovery of grabbed parts of the river Padma and its tributaries from the grips of illegal land grabbers and to dredge the river Padma to ensure its water flow throughout the year and to set up a river port in Rajshahi.
The human chain programme was held in tune with the International Day of Action for Rivers.
RRSP leaders and activists with the slogan written in the banner as' Rajshahi will be saved if the river Padma is saved and if the river dies, entire Bangladesh will turn to a desert' mentioned in their speech that year after years, the natural flow of the river Padma is being squeezed and narrowed down with devastating effects on entire nature and the environment.
Presided over by RRSP President Jamat Khan, the human chain was addressed, among others by Advisor of BAPA Liakat Ali, Journalist Akbarul Hasan Millat, Freedom fighter Dr Abdul Mannan, BAP Vice President Debashish Pramanik Debu, Mijnaur Rahman, Dr Hemayetul islam Arif, Women leader Selina Khatun, Vice-President of Rajshahi Babsayee Oikkya Parishad Shafiqur Rahman Ripon, Gen Secy of ASK Foundation Ayub Ali, Adibashi leader Subhash Chandra Henbrom, Youth leader KM Jobayed Hossain, Jahid Hasan and Farad Ali Rinku.
