The Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested a man posing as a customs officer while attempting to commit fraud near the Customs House at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday.

The arrestee, identified as Md Sabur Khan, 25, was caught red-handed wearing a fake customs jacket near Hangar Gate No. 8 on the eastern side of the Customs House.

According to the APBn, Sabur and his accomplice Hares, 32, approached Md Suman Mia, 29, a resident of Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria, on Sunday night around 9:20pm, impersonating customs officials.

They allegedly took 95 grams of gold jewellery and a mobile phone from him and attempted to flee.

On-duty APBn personnel managed to arrest Sabur Khan on the spot, while his associate escaped with the stolen gold.

Sources said the fraud ring has long been active in the airport area, deceiving passengers and travellers by posing as airport or customs officials to steal valuables.

Md Suman Mia later filed a case with the Airport Police Station against the arrested suspect and other members of the gang.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mozammel Haque, Operational Commander of Airport (13) APBn, said: “Several fraud gangs are trying to operate around the airport. We are conducting regular drives to prevent smuggling and fraudulent activities.”
