Four to walk gallows in blogger Ananta Bijoy murder case

A Sylhet court on Wednesday sentenced four people to death and acquitted one person in blogger and science writer Ananta Bijoy Das murder case.

Judge Md Nurul Amin Biplob of the Sylhet Anti-Terrorism Tribunal pronounced the verdict around 12:30pm on Wednesday, Mominur Rahman Titu, prosecutor of the case confirmed the matter.

Of the convicts, Abul Khaer Rashid Ahmed, has been in jail since filing of the case in 2015, while three others -- Foysal Ahmed, Mamun Ur Rashid and Abul Hossain, remain absconding.

The court has acquitted Shafiur Rahman Farabi of the murder case.

The other accused of the case - Mannan Yeahia alias Ibn Moin died during the trial.

On May 12 in 2015, Ananta Bijoy Das, a science writer linked to Mukto-Mona website, was hacked to death by machete wielders in front of his residence.

His elder brother Ratneshwar Das filed a murder case on the same day.

Initially, police was in charge of investigating the murder, but the case was later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

On May 9, 2017, charges were filed against six people over the murder.
