Four members of the same family, including a retired mathematics teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, were found dead inside a locked house in Machuapara area of Kamal Kachna in Rangpur city.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), after inspecting the scene, initially suspects that they may have been killed during a robbery two to three days ago.
Rangpur CID Additional Superintendent of Police Sumit Chowdhury said the condition of the scene suggested that the incident occurred two to three days ago. Based on the initial evidence, it appeared to be a robbery, and the victims may have been strangled with towels or pieces of cloth.
He said the electricity connection to the house had been disconnected. Furniture and other places where gold ornaments were usually kept had also been broken open. The actual cause of the incident would be known after the investigation.
The bodies were recovered from the locked house in Machuapara at around 11:30pm on Saturday (22 August). The deceased were Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12.
Police, a special CID team, the Fire Service and other agencies were working at the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
According to police, the teacher’s house had remained locked from outside for several days. As there had been no response from inside for a long time and a foul smell was coming from the house, local residents became suspicious. They informed the police, who broke open the lock and recovered the four bodies.
Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Kotwali Police Station Nazmul Kader said Ganapati Chakraborty’s body was recovered from the roof, those of his wife and daughter from the staircase leading to the third floor, and his son’s body from underneath a bed.
Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel retired from teaching last December. He subsequently provided regular treatment at a homeopathy chamber. His ancestral home is in the Mirzapur area of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur.
The OC said the main gate of the two-storey house was locked. After breaking open the lock, police entered the house and recovered Priyam’s body from underneath a bed on the second floor, those of Pritilata and Prarthi from the staircase leading to the third floor, and Ganapati Chakraborty’s body from the roof.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner (DIG) Mohammad Abdul Mabud said the incident was being treated with the highest importance and that necessary information and evidence were being collected. #EK
