The CID has arrested four Nigerian and Ghanaian nationals on charges of embezzling money through Facebook.

On Tuesday, the CID arrested them from Bashundhara area of Kawlar and Bhatara under Dakshin Khan police station in the capital.

This information was given by the Special Superintendent of Police of the Serious Crime Unit Syeda Jannat Ara at a press conference held at the CID headquarters in Malibagh on Wednesday.

The detainees are Nigerian nationals Moro Mohammed, Morrison, and Ghanaian nationals Sesom and Anthony, two Ghanaians.

Of these, Moro Mohammed and Morrison arrived on a 30-day visa but stayed in the country for eight years. During this time, the players have committed various crimes. The two Ghanaians, Sesom and Anthony, came on one-year student visas. None of them extended their visas.

The CID has confirmed in the preliminary interrogation that the arrested foreigners have been staying in Bangladesh for a long time and have not been able to show any valid documents and passports of their stay in the country.

Syeda Jannat Ara said, "First they enter Bangladesh on tourist, sports, business and student visas, then with the help of some local agents they commit such frauds."

Although arrested on specific charges, the accused claimed to be students and footballers when they were brought to the CID office at noon.

Police said the detainees arrived in Bangladesh between 2012 and 2016, but their visas expired long ago.
