Four new police stations likely to be added to CMP

Published : 13 Mar 2022 09:07 PM

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has been operating in the city since 2012 with 16 police stations.  Although the CMP has taken initiative to form 4 police stations in 2015, 8 in 2018 and 6 in 2021, it has never seen the light of day due to border complexities, opposition of district police or violation of rules of headquarters or ministry.  However, 4 new police stations are being added to the Chittagong Metropolitan Police.

If these four new police stations are added, the number of police stations in CMP will increase to 20.  The proposed new police stations are: Mohra Thana in the North Division of CMP, Kattoli Thana in the West Division, Bangabandhu Tunnel North Thana in the Port Division and Bangabandhu Tunnel South Thana.  Earlier, the CMP was operating in a total of 16 police stations by setting up 4 new police stations in the metropolitan area in 2012.

Confirming the matter, SM Mostafa Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Estate and Building Division (CMP), said, "Although initiatives were taken at various times to expand the police station, it was not possible due to various complications."  The proposal to create 4 new police stations has gone to the Home Ministry through the police headquarters.  From the Ministry of Home Affairs it is now in the Ministry of Public Administration.  I hope an official notification will be issued soon.

He said, we have demarcated the border and sent proposals after analyzing the issues of manpower structure.  The Ministry of Public Administration is in charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs as it has been done properly or there was no objection.  If notified the construction of the police station infrastructure and the location of the police station building will be finalized.  In the meantime, we have already completed some infrastructural developments.  If the notification is issued, it will not take much time to start the official activities of the police station.

According to CMP sources, Chittagong is no less important than the capital Dhaka in terms of economy and population.  Besides, mega development projects including the country's first Bangabandhu Tunnel under construction along the Karnafhuli River, Outer Ring Road along the beach, Kalurghat New Bridge under construction, Elevated Expressway are being implemented in Chittagong metropolis.  The government has taken a policy decision to set up 4 new police stations considering the possible economic and commercial security situation.

The 'Bangabandhu Tunnel North Thana' will be re-centered around the whole of Patenga Ward No. 41, Naval Academy, Airport, Patenga Beach and the north bank of the tunnel, dividing Patenga Thana of CMP's Port Division around Bangabandhu Tunnel and Elevated Expressway.  Bangabandhu Tunnel South Than will be set up on that side of the river. Karnafhuli Fertilizer (Kafco) of Anwara Police Station, Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Factory (CUFL), Anwara Parki Beach and Tunnel Toll Plaza will be under this police station.

Jan Ali Hat Railway Station to be constructed at Mohra of Chandgaon Police Station in North Division of CMP, New Kalurghat Road with Rail Bridge, Chittagong WASA Water Treatment Plant Project, Kalurghat Heavy Industrial Area and BSIC Area  '  A six-storey multi-storey building has already been constructed at Kalurghat police outpost.  Basically, that building will take the form of Mohra Thana.  Besides, Kattoli Thana will consist of the whole area of North Kattoli Ward No. 10 of Akbarshah Thana area of CMP's western division as well as some parts of Chhalimpur area from Sitakunda.  There are various facilities including Outer Ring Road, Chittagong Medical College University.

Bangabandhu Tunnel was surrounded by 'Bangabandhu Tunnel Thana', 'Bara Uthan Thana' and 'Biman bandar Thana' in 2020.  A proposal has been sent to the police station.  It came back from the police headquarters due to various objections.  At present, the total number of police in CMP including 16 police stations and reserve force is more than 7,000.  If these four police stations are increased, it is known that the number of officers and force may increase by 300 more.
