Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested Shahedur Rahman Dipu (50), former chairman of Eklashpur Union and a local Awami League leader, in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali. A pipe gun was recovered during the arrest. He was produced before a judicial court on Sunday afternoon.
The arrest took place late Saturday night at a business establishment named Anandadhara LP Gas in the Anantapur area of Eklashpur Union.
Dipu, son of Shafiqul Rahman from Panchayet Bari in West Anantapur, recently served as the chairman of Eklashpur Union Parishad.
According to police, they received a tip-off that several armed individuals were staying at the Anandadhara LP Gas outlet in Ward-2 of Eklashpur. Acting on the intelligence, a team from the district DB conducted a raid and arrested Dipu from the premises. Based on his confession, the pipe gun was later recovered from above the ceiling of the shop.
District DB Officer-in-Charge Asraf Uddin stated that Dipu is named in five separate cases. A new case under the Arms Act has been filed, and he has been sent to court.
