Badal Roy, former Bangladesh national team footballer and vice-president of Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) breathed his last on Sunday afternoon.
He was at the fourth stage of liver cancer and having other serious health complications. Having serious breathing complaints on November 5, he was shifted to Square Hospital from Asgar Ali Hospital.
Former footballer Hasanuzzaman Khan, a teammate of Badal Roy, said, “Badal was released from Square Hospital and taken to his home. However, on behalf of his family, he was first taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital and later to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital”.
The former Mohammedan captain suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2016. He was taken to Singapore by air ambulance. Although he recovered after a long treatment, the disease left an impression on his body.
He has been seen to be vocal about various issues of BFF. He played a major role in the reconstruction of Mohammedan after the casino scandal. In the latest BFF election, he also contested for the post of president as a rival of Kazi Salauddin.
Earlier, Badal Roy served as the co-president of BFF for three terms.
He was the captain of Mohammedan in 1981 and 1986. After leaving the game, the former star footballer also acted as the manager of Mohammedan.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has mourned the death of the former footballer. She conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
