A Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected the bail petition of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in a sedition case filed over allegations of orchestrating a sham election.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefat Ullah passed the order after hearing a bail plea filed by Huda's lawyer, Tawhidul Islam Sajeeb.

On June 22, local residents detained Nurul Huda from his residence in Sector 5 of Uttara and handed him over to police. The following day, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station filed a case accusing him of abusing his authority to conduct a fraudulent election.

Huda was initially placed on a four-day remand, which was later extended by another four days. On July 1, Nurul Huda reportedly gave a confessional statement in court, which was accepted by the magistrate.

Nurul Huda, a former bureaucrat, was sworn in as the country’s 12th Chief Election Commissioner on February 15, 2017. He oversaw the 11th parliamentary election in 2018 along with other local polls during his tenure.
