Former Biman director, DGM held for ‘Tk 117cr embezzlement’

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday arrested a former director of the state-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines and its former Deputy General Manager (DGM) on charges of embezzling Tk 118cr from a cargo handling project. ACC Deputy Director (Public Relations) Pranab Kumer Bhattachariya said former Biman director Ali Ahsan Babu and former Biman DGM Iftekhar Hossain Chowdhury were arrested from Segunbagicha area in the capital.

Earlier in the morning, a case was filed with the ACC against the duo on charges of incurring Tk 118cr loss on the state, as they did not realise the amount. ACC deputy director Md Nasir Uddin filed the case with the Dhaka-1 coordinated office of ACC against a total of 16 officials and employees of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines, including Babu and Iftekhar.

In the case statement, it has been mentioned that all those 16 people were involved with the embezzlement of Tk 118 crore. Other accused other people were identified as Acting General Manager (Cargo Service) of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines, M Habibullah Akand, former Assistant Managers Md Shahidul Islam, who is now posted in Saudi Arabia as a Country Manager, Aminul Huq Bhuiyan, who is now posted in Riyadh of Saudi Arabia as a Regional Manager, Md Lutfe Jamal, Mosharraf Hossain Talukder, Nasir Uddin Talukder, Tapan Kumer Barua, KN Alam, Md Fazlul Huq, Syed Ahmed Patwari, Monir Ahmed Majumder, AKM Manjurul Huq and Md Shahjahan. ACC officials said process to arrest the rest accused people was on.
