Foot overbridge collapses again after barge hit in shariatpur

Published : 23 Jun 2025 09:05 PM

A partially constructed foot overbridge on the Narayanganj-Jajira road over the Kirtonkhola River collapsed again early Monday after being hit by a barge. Around 6:30 AM, the barge struck a pillar, causing the middle span to collapse and sink into the river along with the barge. No casualties were reported.

This marks the second such incident—the first occurred on October 2 last year at the same spot when another barge hit the structure.

Local sources say the barge was traveling from the Padma River towards Shariatpur Sadar via the Kirtonkhola when it struck the pillar. The bridge, built by LGED at a cost of Tk 1.08 crore, was meant to ease crossings during the construction of the nearby Golam Mawla Bridge.

Attempts to reach LGED Executive Engineer S.M. Rafeul Islam were unsuccessful. Narayanganj Police OC Aslam Uddin Molla said he would look into the matter after his ongoing law and order meeting.
