Food Secretary Md. Masudul Hasan said that food-related research must not only identify problems but also provide clear solutions. Since the research is funded by public money, it must prioritize the public’s interest.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Briefing on Research Projects Undertaken in Fiscal Year 2024-25 and Cheque Distribution Ceremony’ organized by the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) at its office in the capital on Sunday.

Food Secretary said, “Food is one of the main causes of non-communicable diseases. In that case, we need to focus on research in these areas. And the research that is being done must be useful to the people.”

He also spoke on the importance of managing food waste.

Special guest additional secretary Shah Abdul Alim said, “We are at the forefront of the world in food adulteration.

Due to mismanagement by a section of the business community, we are becoming a self-destructive nation. We will try to increase the budget for research. This effort by the Food Safety Authority will help build a better life for future generations.”

BFSA chairman Zakaria said, “Our research aims to identify problems and suggest solutions for policymakers to implement. This year, priority was given to identifying food problems. We are far behind in science-based evidence.”

BFSA member professor Dr. Mohammad Shoeb said, “The current world is emphasizing science-based food production. We researchers will stay connected with BFSA... We have to think about how these projects can benefit the common people.”

Professor Dr. Shakila Nargis Khan of Dhaka University addressing the researchers said, “Safe food is a key element of national development.

What can be the future of a country whose food is not safe? Many research projects are difficult to complete in one year. You must identify problems and also suggest solutions... The research should not be confined to paper but must be spread so everyone can benefit.”

During the event, it was announced that 10 research projects were selected for the 2024-25 fiscal year from 110 proposals. A total grant of Tk 1.194 crore was distributed to the researchers from various universities and institutes. This is the third year the BFSA has provided such grants.
