Food products are facing adulteration for as long as anyone can remember. From using harmful chemicals as preservatives in drinks to using antibiotic in dairy products, substandard food products have spread far and wide on the shelves of shops and to the households of general public. However, even though time and again there have been crackdowns on companies who have hands in these illegal and harmful activities, the issue has never completely been subsided.

Reports published in this daily have pointed out the fact over and over about chemicals and harmful substances being used beyond the permissible level. Even though BSTI has conducted multiple drives and cancelled licenses of multiple companies still there are groups who are active in these harmful and potentially fatal activities.

Researchers and experts are of the same mind about adulterated food in the country. They opine that because of substandardisation of food products the risk in public health has increased exponentially. One of the major risks this poses is the probability of carcinogen developing within the human body. Statistics portray a grim scene where every year 4 lakh people get diagnosed with cancer. Even when facing such a dire situation it is really disconcerting as to why food companies are still indulging themselves in activities which might harm their fellow countrymen.

Other than this, in the agricultural fields too there is misuse of unregulated pesticides by farmers. With the export of vegetables and fruits the harmful chemicals are also being shifted to other countries. Once this gets out, the foreign trade will face an unprecedented amount of backlash and also foreign relations can be hindered due to export of such adulterated food.

It is high time that the authorities take this seriously and plan the best possible way to counter the problem. On another note, the companies which are producing these food products should maintain their standard and play by the rules of BSTI. Strong vigilance of both the authorities concerned and company hierarchs is a must in order to fully subvert the few miscreants who are playing with human lives.
