Flyovers in the capital have become a symbol of development and infrastructural growth of Bangladesh. Most of the flyovers in the capital have proven crucial instruments to reduce traffic congestion and make commuting of Dhaka dwellers easier. But the Achilles’ heel of these flyovers is the poor lighting and the ill-maintenance of the lights which are available. Due to this reason, crooks and muggers have selected flyovers as a potential place for continuing their anti-social activities.

Recent reports published in this daily suggest that at night lack of adequate lighting on the flyovers create an opportunity for criminals to roam around freely in search of prey. And, under the shroud of inadequate lighting many city dwellers are suffering at the hands of criminals.

Moreover, roadside robbery is also a frequent occurrence on flyovers. During the Eid holidays a number of motorcycle related incidents, where youngsters on motorcycles have robbed people travelling on flyovers have occurred.

The lack of proper street lighting on the flyovers has caused such problems in the past and is still going on.

On the other hand, the lower portions of the flyovers—under the spans and surrounding the pillars—anti-social activities like drug slinging and usage continue to rage on every day.

The users of ridesharing apps are also at risk. The recent boom in the usage of similar apps in the recent years is quite a shift from the traditional means of transportation. But, there are reported incidents where the riders have fallen prey to criminal activities.

The flyovers have CC cameras but they only remain witness to crimes that take place but the law enforcement organisations have to play the pivotal role in making the flyovers safer for the public.
