Most of the flyovers in Dhaka continue to remain in darkness as most of the street lights stay out of order. As a result, commuters who use the flyovers either in their private vehicles or rented transport like auto rickshaws, often fall victims to street robbery. After visiting several flyovers and city streets, this correspondent found all the street light non-functional keeping the entire stretch of the flyover in the darkness.
Despite publishing news and photos of such neglected condition of the city flyovers and foot over bridges the authority concerned are yet to take any action. Commuters, outraged by the negligence, demand immediate fixing of the street lights and also punish those who have neglected their duties.
It was 11.30 pm on Thursday, a “thick darkness” covered the Maghbazar flyover. The same picture of flyover remaining in darkness was found on the part of the same flyover that falls in the direction of Sonargaon Hotel. The light posts had light bulbs but none worked. This situation has been prevailing for a long time, locals said. The same scenario can be found in almost all seven flyovers of the capital. Due to the darkness many robberies have taken place in those highly insecure areas, sources said.
Apart from the flyovers, most of the city foot over bridges also remain blanketed in thick darkness when night falls. It is commonly reported that mugging on the dark foot over bridges frequently takes place. As the night progresses, the flyovers are occupied by criminals. Two city corporations have the responsibility of managing almost all the capital's roads and flyovers, including the lamps and signal lights.
However, it is the responsibility of the local government ministry to build and maintain the flyovers. Not only in this area, but also some areas of Mouchak-Malibagh flyover, Banglamotar-Moghbazar road, Paribagh, Dhanmondi, Azimpur, Mohammadpur, Kamrangirchar, Mirpur, Turag, Uttara, Jatrabari and some parts of old Dhaka, do not have security, claim concerned residents of the areas.
