Flower sales marked a rapid rise as many people, especially youths, thronged flower shops to buy flowers to celebrate the Pahela Falgun and Valentine’s Day.

February is a month of celebration and mourning.

In tune with nature, Basanti flowers come to the flower market this month.

The florists of Agargaon and Shahbagh, the two big markets of the capital, expect that they will sell about Tk 3.5 crore worth of flowers this month around Valentine's Day and PahelaFalgun and International Mother Language Day.

On Monday, traders spent a busy time at the flower markets of Agargaon and Shahbagh areas in the capital.

They say that now it is the best time for their business. During this time, they sell half the flowers of the year.

Traders claim that although the demand for flowers is high this year, comparatively less flowers are coming to the market.

Azizur Rahman Liton, Joint General Secretary of Sherebanglanagar  Flower  Growers and Flower Traders Association said, "This is the high time of flower business. At other times there is not much sales. Our sales are particularly good during Valentine's Day and Spring Festival and International Mother Language Day."

He hopes we can sell flowers worth about Tk 2.3 crore in this market,

However, due to the rise of artificial flowers day by day, farmers are discouraged from growing flowers and besides this, the flower market is also suffering, he said.

China rose, Lincoln rose, mace rose, chandramukhi, gladiolus, marigolds and grass flowers are being sold in these two flower markets of the capital.

Apart from this, one can also buy ready-made flower bouquets and flower vases. Each bouquet is being sold from Tk 400 to Tk 1500.  However, one can buy a bouquet of fresh flowers by ordering.

However, the price is slightly higher this year than that of last year.  As the demand is high, each China rose is being sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40.

Besides, some roses are being sold for Tk 20 to Tk 30 depending on the quality.  Gladiolus is being sold at Tk 10 per piece.

However, traders expect that the price of roses may increase on Valentine's Day. SaidulAlam,  a flower trader in Agargaon, said, "This time the price of flowers is very high. Sellers are willingly selling at higher prices. That is why this time we have to buy flowers at a higher price and sell them at a higher price." He said flower sales increased this year despite higher prices.

He expects sales to rise manifold today (on Tuesday) due to the celebration of the PahelaFalgun and Valentine’s Day.
