The recent rains in the country have triggered floods all across the country. Roads and highways are the main way for commuting of citizens to distant parts. As thousands of vehicles ply the roads each day, it is crucial to maintain the condition of the roads as per road safety regulations. With Eid-ul-Azha in the horizon, the government’s decision to fix up the roads to prevent flooding from taking place is a good initiative.

Last year, the scenes of water logged roads in the capital mixed with blood from the sacrificed cattle remains all too fresh in the minds. Incessant downpour in the central and northern regions of Bangladesh have resulted in the flooding of a number of areas. But, to ensure smooth and continuous flow of traffic around the country in Eid the government has taken this decision. Reports published in this daily say that the roads and highways have slowly become unfit for smooth movement of transports, triggering fear of making Eid holiday journey hazardous. The primary reasons behind this are big potholes and cracks on innumerable points on these roads and highways.

The roads have become unfit for

vehicular movement because of

big craters at certain parts of the roads

On another note, officials of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry have given a special focus on the repairing of flood affected roads on an emergency basis with the holidays nearing. In the last few years there have been road maintenance work going on around the main highways of the country still there are a number of roads which need repairing.

The authorities concerned should focus on fixing of the roads which are creating impediments in the roads. The roads have become unfit for vehicular movement because of big craters at certain parts of the roads. If it takes a longer time to cross a small distance then plying of vehicles during the Eid times will be much more difficult. Speedy repairs must be completed soon to avert this impediment hampering the national holidays.
