The low-lying areas of the country’s northern and northeastern  region including Sylhet, Netrokona, Sunamganj, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and adjoining upstream areas are likely to be inundated. A bulletin of Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board says all the major rivers in the north, north-east region of the country are in rising trend.

Due to the chance of heavy rainfall in the adjoining upstream, some rivers of this region may rise rapidly and cause short-term flood situation in the adjoining low-lying areas. The Teesta river may cross danger level at Dalia point. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Padma rivers are also in steady state, while the Ganges River is in rising trend, which may continue. Therefore, early preparedness will have to be taken immediately to face any situation during possible flood in the region.

Apart from flood, due to the severe erosion of the Jamuna River caused by the upstream flow of water, many lands and houses in Tangail and Sirajganj are also going under water.

Flood situation in

Sylhet and Netrokona

is getting worse

Following the rise in water level of different rivers, including the Dudhkumar, Dharla, Teesta and Brahmaputra, Surma and Kushiara, and nonstop rains, flood has occurred in many places of Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Kurigram, Bogura, Sirajganj, Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona districts. Therefore, flood situation in Sylhet and Netrokona is getting worse as many people have been marooned there.

Rivers in different areas of the country are flowing above the danger level and that is why the flood situation may worsen in the region due to continuous heavy downpour in the country and onrush of water from the upstream. Besides, many points in the country’s northern and northeaster have been identified as vulnerable to flooding. Around 7.2 million people have been severely affected following devastating flash floods in nine northeastern districts of the country last year. The affected districts were - Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Kishoreganj, Netrakona, Brahmanbaria, Mymensingh and Sherpur.

Among the nine districts, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulivazar, Habiganj and Netrakona were the most affected. The recent flood had destroyed habitats, houses, crops, livestock and fisheries in those districts.

Sufferings of the flood-hit people were intensified with deterioration of overall flood situation there. All communications between the upazila town and the villages were cut off. People were searching for shelter in boats. Boats were the only means of communication then. Therefore, all concerned should remain prepared to tackle the flood as the water of the rivers is on rising trend.
