The water of the Padma River is flowing over the danger line now. As a result, the lower areas of Munshiganj are being flooded. Houses are being submerged in the floodwaters. The people of the flood-hit areas are suffering from clean water and food crisis. Thousands of people are spending their days marooned in the area.

According to the Water Development Board, water of Padma was flowing at Bhagyakul Point in the district at 46 cm above the danger level and at Mawa Point at 9 cm above the danger level on Saturday. It has inundated the riverside Tongibari and lower areas of Louhjong upazila of the district.

It is learned that Hasail-Banari, Dighirpar, Kamarkhara, Panchgaon of Tongibari upazila and Kalma, Konaksar, Haldia, Kumarbhog and Medinimandal of Louhjong upazila have been flooded. Water is also entering the highlands due to continuous rise of water level. There is a shortage of clean water in the flooded areas.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Abdul Quddus Bulbul said five tonnes of rice has been allocated for six upazilas of the district in preparation for the flood.

Narendra Shankar Chakraborty, executive engineer of the district water development board, said the water level in the Padma could rise till September 7 as per the flood forecast.

Then there is the possibility of water reduction. If it rains, the water may rise for a few more days. Authorities do not have much to do when the water level rises. Government will take action if any important installation is damaged or likely to collapse after the water recedes.
