Flight operations at Syedpur Airport in Nilphamari were suspended on Saturday morning due to dense fog. As a result, the journey of nearly 150 passengers at the airport was delayed.
The first flight was scheduled to land at Syedpur Airport at 8:30am on Saturday, but due to heavy fog, two flights from Novoair and Air Astra landed two hours later at 10:30am.
According to the officials at Syedpur met office, there was heavy fog in the region since early Friday morning. On Saturday morning, the temperature was 18.5°C. For smooth flight operations, a visibility of at least 2,000 meters is required. However, there was only 50 metres of visibility, causing disruptions in air travel.
The met office at the airport reported that visibility in the area was only 300 metres to 400 metres at 9:00am, further affecting flight operations. Earlier, due to thick fog on Friday morning, flight operations had also been suspended but resumed two hours later.
The airport's manager, AKM Bahauddin Zakaria, said that the increasing cold in the northern region has led to dense fog, affecting flight operations. However, morning flights were not canceled, even though they were halted for a while. It is expected that flight operations will normalize once the skies clear after 11:00am.
Meanwhile, passengers have called for the re-scheduling of flights like last year to prevent schedule disruption.
