The flood situation in low-lying areas of the country’s north and northeastern region is feared to be worsening.

Besides, a vast areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulavi Bazar districts have already started to overflowed with the on-rush of water coming from the upper steam in the neighbouring hills in Meghalaya and Assam in India. Besides, the heavy downpour is also worsening the flash flood situation.

Many dams have already been damaged causing sufferings to people of the areas. Huge standing crops are feared, either already damaged or in the process of being damaged.

The officials of the ‘Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre’ under the Bangladesh Water Development Board on Sunday said that the water level in Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma rivers were showing rising trend, which may continue in next 72 hours.

It said, “Due to heavy rainfall in the North-Eastern region and adjoining upstream, all major rivers of this region are rising rapidly.”

According to the weather forecasting agencies, there is a chance of heavy to very-heavy rainfall in the North-Eastern region and adjoining upstream regions of the country in the next 48-hours.

As a result, the water level of different major rivers of this region like Surma, Kushiyara, Sarigowain, Jhalukhali, Bhugai-Kangsha, Someswari and Jadukata may rise rapidly and create a short-term flood situation in the low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj district at this time.

Besides, due to heavy rainfall, the forecast said, water level in the Teesta-Dharla basin and adjoining upstream region may rise rapidly. The Dudhkumar river at Pateswari point may cross respective danger level in next 24 hours.

The met office in its forecast on Sunday said it might rain along with thundershowers in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in Dhaka, Barisal and Chittagong divisions. It also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sylhet in the next few days.

Moreover, Indian television channel NVTV reports that due to heavy downpour for last several days, a vast area of Assam State in India has been over flooded. Over 34,000 people in 11 districts of the state have been affected due to rise in the water level of different major rivers.

Experts say that the flood situation in Bangladesh, mainly in Sylhet, Sunamganj and Moulavi Bazar may take a serious turn when the water from the upper steam start to flow down to the low lying land in Bangladesh.
