All the rivers have started to swell, triggered by the onrush of water from the upstream and monsoon rain, inundating low-lying areas in different upazilas of Jamal

pur district.

Water in Jamura river continuously increases at different upazilas of the district including Dewanganj, Islampur, Melandoh, Madargonj, Sarishabari, triggering panic among locals of the areas.

According to the Water Development Board in Jamalpur, the water level in different rivers in the Haor area has increased significantly in the last 24 hours, but the water level of the rivers has not crossed the danger level yet.

Visiting the flood -affected areas on Wednesday morning, this correspondent informed that the Noarpara village of the Islampur upazila ended into the Jamuna river.

People were seen moving on boats while vegetable farms, Aman rice seed-beds and jute farms were inundated.

Talking to Bangladesh Post, river erosion victims Hasor Ali, Ramjan Mondol, Abdul Barik, shahidur Rahman expressed their concern as villages  and localities have been affected as the river water entered their houses and submerged

the roads.

Marjina Begum, a resident of Melandah upazila, said that she, along with her family, took shelter at the flood protection dam on Wednesday as the flood water entered her house.

They alleged that the authorities concerned did not dump GO bags properly. Thus, the flood protection dam collapsed due to the strong current.

Aggressive river erosion and flash flood forced a number of village men and women to live under the open sky, losing their belongings to the mighty river.

Noarpara Union Chairman Engineer Ruman Hasan said that river erosion intensified in Katma village as the water level of Jamuna river increased.

“We are taking measures and informing the concerned Water Development Board in this regard,” he said.
