The flooding in lowlands of Kurigram district has worsened in recent days. Rising waters have cut off road communications and stranded many people. The water level of all the rivers including Dharla, Teesta, Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar is rising in the district.

The low-lying areas of the char area of the river basin have been inundated due to the abnormal rise in the water level of Dharla river in the last 24 hours. Rural roads in these areas have been submerged.

It is learned that jute, maize, vegetable fields and seedbeds have been submerged as well. River erosion has increased in some areas. Two houses were destroyed and 8 others were on the brink of getting destroyed in a landslide in Rajarhat upazila on Wednesday.

Besides, the flood control dam in Sardob area of Sadar upazila has collapsed, said local UP member Bakinur Rahman. Raw roads, vegetables and jute fields have been submerged in Jayakumar of Chinai Union in Rajarhat.

According to the Water Development Board, the water level in Dharla has risen by 114 cm, Teesta by 10 cm, Dudhkumar by 9 cm and Brahmaputra by 11 cm in the last 24 hours.

Water Development Board Executive Engineer Ariful Islam said that even if the water level rises, there is no possibility of it crossing the danger line. Areas prone to erosion are being monitored.
