Leaders of teachers’ organisations of Bangladesh Diploma Engineers Association have demanded fixing an age limit for diploma course admission in technical education institutions.

There is no bar of age limit for admission according to the new policy. If the new policy is not canceled, we will start a nationwide movement from September 5, the agitated teachers said.

They disclosed the matter at a press conference jointly organised by five organisations of Polytechnic Diploma Engineers at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Monday. Bangladesh Diploma Engineers Service Association, Bangladesh Polytechnic Teachers Association, Bangabandhu Diploma Engineers Council, Bangladesh Polytechnic Students Council and Bangladesh Diploma Engineers Service Association Coordination Council organized the program.

They also said that without any discussion, the Ministry of Education has issued a notification regarding the admission in Diploma Engineering courses without fixing any age limit.

According to them, this will create anarchy in the education system. A dissatisfaction has already been created among the teachers and students of the institutions.

“There will be a fear of misunderstanding and dispute among the young and older students. The environment of the classroom may be hampered with the new policy,” they added.

Moreover, older students are at risk of dropping out. Therefore, the quality of technical education will not be maintained, they further said.

Polytechnic Teachers Association Secretary AM Zahirul Islam said, “If there is no age limit in the diploma engineering courses, the classrooms will be chaotic. Many will leave school and become addicted to drugs and do bad things.”

Demanding immediate cancellation of such admission with no age limit bar, the speakers said that new admission policy should be canceled to ensure the quality of technical education.

Convener of the Coordination Council of Bangladesh Diploma Engineers Association Fazlur Rahman Khan presided over the press conference.

Fazlur Rahman Khan said, “A conference of delegates from all over the country will be held at Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in Kakrail on September 5. If our demand is not met, a wider program will be held across the country.”

Among others, Member Secretary of Polytechnic Teachers Association Sirajul Islam, Bangabandhu Engineers Council President Khabir Hossain, Bangabandhu Engineers Council Secretary AKM Abdul Motaleb, Bangladesh Technical School and College Teachers Association President Siddique Ahmed and representative of Technical Student Council, were present at the conference.
