Five alleged members of an inter-district robbery gang were arrested by a special team of Detective Branch (DB) police in Cumilla while they were preparing to commit a robbery.
Acting on a tip-off, the DB team conducted a drive at Lalmai Bazar in Barpara Union under Sadar Dakshin upazila on the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway at around 3am on August 17. Two suspects were arrested from a pickup allegedly being used for the robbery, while three others were caught attempting to flee on a motorcycle.
According to police, the suspects had gathered at Paduar Bazar under Sadar Dakshin Police Station on Monday night and were heading towards Paranpur Bazar to commit a robbery on the Cumilla-Chandpur highway. The DB team intercepted them at Lalmai Bazar before the robbery could take place and recovered robbery tools.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted to committing robberies in different police station areas of several districts in Chattogram Division for a long time. Their alleged leader, Zahirul Islam Pradhania Faruk, has five regular cases against him at different police stations in Chandpur district.
The arrested suspects are Zahirul Islam Pradhania Faruk, 53, son of late Qari Shahidullah; Md Mamun Miji, 45, son of late Kalam Miji; Md Kabir Bhuiya, 40, son of late Bachchu Mia; Md Rabiul Alam, 35, son of late Dhulubari; and Md Nazrul Islam, 35, son of Abul Bashar.
Police seized one iron bolt cutter, one adjustable wrench, one pair of pliers, one iron rod, two kirij knives with wooden handles, one hasua with a wooden handle, one black cloth bag, one blue pickup and one black Discover motorcycle.
A case was filed on Tuesday, and the arrested suspects were produced before the court. The court ordered that the five accused be sent to jail custody. #EK
